This year, the Open Call within the framework of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK was directed at the theme "Swapping - Sharing - Trading: An engagement between local providers and residents" to innovative and socially-minded design creators.
In 2022, the festival format has set itself the goal of supporting projects that deal with social issues of social coexistence in the focus district of Mariahilf. Options for action are to show how existing structures and potentials can be used through the networking of residents and businesses in a district in order to create added value for the immediate surroundings.
The jury will select three projects that will be awarded the Erste Bank ExtraVALUE Design Award and supported in their realisation. The winning projects will be presented as part of the festival programme at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2022.
The Winning Projects 2022
EXPO – Exchange Potentials
With "EXPO - Exchange Potentials", Theo Deutinger, Pia Prantl and Chris Clarkson from The Department declare Vienna's 6th district, Mariahilf, as an EXPO site. Existing businesses, services and institutions are invited to present themselves as the economic and social glue of the Mariahilfer community. The participating businesses will be presented in a map. During the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, tours through the neighbourhood will be offered to stimulate exchange, sharing and action - not only with goods, but also with information, attention and interest.
Instant Noodle Bar
For the exhibition format "Post Apocalyptic Kaffeehaus" of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2021, oversized plant tubs were used to present the design objects. Pierre Castignola & Diego Faivre associated these containers with giant Instant Noodle cups. The French designers, based in the Netherlands, are bringing the vessels back to Vienna in the form of an Instant Noodle Bar in this year's festival edition.
The bowls, chopsticks and spoons are made especially for the venue in Do It Yourself style. Inspired by a DIY trend that uses instant noodles to try and repair a wide variety of items, several workshops will be organised where people can bring their cherished broken items and receive support in repairing them.
