Composition Award Winner 2022
Sara Glojnarić
The Erste Bank Composition Award 2022 goes to Sara Glojnarić. The jury consisting of the composer Gerd Kühr, Christian Scheib (ORF, musikprotokoll) and Peter Paul Kainrath (artistic director Klangforum Wien) has nominated the composer Sara Glojnarić, born in Zagreb in 1991, as the winner of the Erste Bank Composition Award 2022.
As an artist, Glojnarić stands for an accentuated and taboo-free contemplation of the socio-political fine mechanics of our contemporary society and, against this background, spans a broad arc in her work as a composer that includes pop culture and art music in equal measure. Multimedia, actionistic and at the same time always grounded in a thorough expertise of instrumental playing practice, as can be heard, for example, in the raving piece "sugarcoating" for instrumental ensemble - Glojnarić ́s music goes to the core, is virtuosic and unwinds with relish between brilliantly set extreme points.
The multi-award-winning composer studied composition at the Zagreb Music Academy and later earned her degree in composition at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart. Sara Glojnarić (Zagreb, Croatia, 1991) focuses in her artistic practice on pop culture, its aesthetics and socio-political consequences, nostalgia and collective memory, as well as the vast network of pop cultural data and its by-products created by their juxtaposition.
Her works, which include opera, orchestral and chamber music pieces, but also video works and multimedia and multi-sensory installations, have been performed by renowned ensembles such as Ensemble Musikfabrik, Trio Catch, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Modern, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Trio Catch, Sarah Maria Sun, Dirk Rothbrust, Ensemble Mimitabu, Rubiks Collective, Decoder Ensemble, The Black Page Orchestra, Croatian Radio Symphony Orchestra and many others, at festivals such as ECLAT Festival Stuttgart, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Ultraschall Festival Berlin, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Showroom of Contemporary Sound, Warsaw Autumn and Music Biennale Zagreb.
In the 2021/22 concert season, her works will be premiered by Klangforum Wien, percussionist Leonie Klein, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Mosaik, Quatour Diotima and the Munich Chamber Orchestra.
