The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra (GMJO) was founded in 1986 in Vienna on the initiative of Claudio Abbado (1933-2014), Hans Landesmann (1932-2013) and Thomas Angyan. The tour repertoire of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra ranges from classical to contemporary music, with a special focus on the great Romantic and Late Romantic symphonic works – not least because it is a traditionally large ensemble, featuring no less than 86 string players.
The only international youth orchestra that is artistically and administratively independent, the GMJO is exclusively committed to promoting the next generation of musicians.
